Communicating successfully around the workplace...
Listener Tip
The workplace can certainly be a challenge for those with hearing loss. As the listener, it is your responsibility to make sure your co-workers understand your
needs. I promise you that saying "What?" several times a day, or missing an important sentence is much more obvious than simply telling your co-workers that you have hearing loss.
Homework Assignment
Tell your
co-workers that you have hearing loss, and educate them about the speaker strategies you've learned. Tell them how much it helps you when they look at you while speaking. In a meeting, ask someone to take notes for you so that you can watch each speaker's face without interruption.
Practice Makes Perfect!
Henry's Hearing Aid Tip
Hearing aids have one or two microphones depending on the style. These will be on the top part of behind-the-ear hearing aids and on the outside part of in-the-ear hearing aids, near the battery door. The microphones are typically protected by a little screen, but that screen can get covered in dead skin, hairspray, makeup, dust, etc. so it is important to brush across those screens on a regular basis to remove any debris that has collected.
