Communicating effectively in the great outdoors...
Environmental Tip
It may be difficult to modify noises that occur in the outdoors, but you can definitely modify where you go. Choose areas away from traffic noise if possible. Bike paths tend to be quieter than normal
sidewalks because there aren't cars driving by. Try to find wide paths where you can walk (or bike) side-by-side with your communication partner.
Homework Assignment
Search your city, town, neighborhood, parks, and open space for sidewalks and trails that are wide and far from traffic noise. Choose these options when enjoying the outdoors with a friend. Be sure to explain to your friend why these paths are better for your outings together.
Practice Makes Perfect!
Henry's Hearing Aid Tip
For those who have hearing aids with wireless capabilities, this is a great environment to use companion microphones. The speaker wears the companion mic on his or her shirt or jacket collar. The listener puts the hearing aids in the wireless program and receives the speaker's voice directly into the hearing aids. This drastically reduces interference from surrounding noises, however it can be challenging in very windy conditions.
